In a small wooded community where drug problems and overdoses are a common occurrence, newly elected police chief, Callie Hauser, has her work cut out for her. Callie’s life will irrevocably change when a new lead in decades old cold case brings familial secrets to light.

I went in completely blind into this book and I have to say I really liked it. It’s a slower paced mystery and police procedural, but the story and characters really made an impact. Callie was a great lead, in a small town where her mother’s history taints how people treat her. Especially in a male-centric field. The multiple stories within really balanced each other. The past timeline with twins Annabelle and Sabrina and Callie’s investigation into their disappearance was intriguing and emotional in a sad way.

The book is very true crime themed and I was engaged in the outcome and its female characters. The atmosphere had some grit and a 90s feel, definitely full of family estrangement and unfortunate truths of a harsh world. I think this will be a great book club read!

Audiobook narration fit the story and setting. Performed by Christine Lakin, Bailey Carr and Mia Wurgaft, showing tons of layers and emotion to the characters.
