This was one of my most anticipated releases this year and I’m glad to have read it, but it fell a little short of my expectations.
I very much enjoyed the author’s beautiful prose, the inspiration and real person behind the story. Leaning more historical than fantasy, though I struggled with the pacing. I would have moments of whimsy, fun and mystery, then a little meandering in the historical politics and fight for power. I didn’t quite connect with Anne and not knowing her real story, I kept getting lost. I did, however, love Isabeau and Elesbed, their scenes were my favorite. Cannot forget good girl 🐈 Butter and the Lost Lands and some unicorn appearances. I thought the fantasy elements were strong and interesting. The overall historical period so rich in imagery, and the cover art 😍 is seriously stunning. I would recommend this to historical fiction fans!
Thank you to Del Rey for the eARC.
