Poppy Stringer is a single mom, moonlighting as an influencer and grave robber. An odd request to retrieve the body of recently deceased musician goes way off kilter when Eddie Michaels wakes up. The theme – never meet your heroes, couldn’t be more fitting. Poppy finds Eddie is not what he seems and the carnage that follows is just the beginning.

Quite on brand, this is just what I’m expecting from a Chuck Tingle book, weird summer horror (complimentary) with surprising depth and balance. While the plot is unexpected and violent, the way he presents events and how the main character reacts, is really unique and engaging. Great pacing and tension make the third act stand out. He created an ultimate skin crawling bad guy, and I was able to visualize the story like a movie. I thought the influencer and pop culture bits were really well done, it’s a bit of a satire in this sense, self aware commentary on the online culture.

Narrated by Mara Wilson, I’m a big fan! Her delivery compliments the tension and severity of the plot, she gave life to Poppy and I liked the range of emotion throughout the whole book.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the advance audiobook.
