Seek the Traitor’s Son is the beginning of a new futuristic sci-fi fantasy from Veronica Roth. I really enjoyed her previous works and I commend her new undertaking, 6 years in the making!

Reimagined Earth where space travel is possible, two rival entities fight for power and survival. Rava Vidar, Elegy Rosyk and her knight Theren Forint, are prophesied to be at the center of this battle, long predicted by the Augers.

The world building was unique and very cool. I love the concept of an alien race making contact with Earth and the events that lead up to our story. There’s plenty of political and religious-esque intrigue. The Talusar people believe in the Fever, a strange sickness that kills but also brings people back to life, changed with various precognition powers. The Cedre people just want to live in peace and far from the Fever, but the conflict between them keeps growing.

I love love love a prophecy plot. I almost wish there was more! I lived for the cryptic messages of what could or would be. The characters were interesting and I liked our main cast. I wish the romance plot was a straight up slow burn, the prophecy is its own thing and I just want more yearning in my novels.

Roth created a space opera saga environment, familial ties, betrayal, revenge and perfectly woven mystery. All these elements really stood out to me. The touch of alien race and technology create a lot of potential for the second book (I believe this will be a duology).

The audiobook is immersive with narrators Imani Jade Powers, Max Meyers, Rebecca Soler, and Steve West. Imani and Max are fantastic as Elegy and Theren. With few chapters delivered by Rebecca and Steve, I was partial to the mystery of Steve West’s chapters, it made me sit up and take notes!

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the advance audiobook copy.
