This was such an interesting character driven fantasy, with themes of war, grief, and a little bit of female rage. I loved the author’s inspiration and mythical lore. The world building is very unique and I’m absolutely loving all the ghostly aspects in fiction lately.
This started out as an urban fantasy with a paranormal angle, but it transforms half way through to historical fiction and mystery. I was pleasantly surprised with how the book unfolded. The character work was complex and really had me questioning where the story would go. I loved the gritty and dark atmosphere, picturesque water landscapes and small island village.
Since this is an early audiobook copy, I downloaded the text sample as it included a small pronunciation guide and spelling of certain phrases. Natalie Naudus narration is perfect, her character voice work and emotional delivery stands out and brings the story to life.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the advance audiobook review copy.
