I keep asking myself how does she do it? Another ~weird~ T. Kingfisher novel but oddly enjoyable, creative, and charming!??
If you are not a fan of bugs, parasites, gore / critter things, have a deep fear of insects eating you alive…… maybe skip this one?
I kinda ended up loving this book. The first half has the typical “where the hell is she going with this story?”-vibe, but it really does come together in the end. It was fun? I already said charming, but it bears repeating. The way she writes female characters is so relatable and I deeply welcome Sonia’s scientific approach to problem solving, it’s so refreshing. It read like a scientific journal, filled with bug facts, documenting the process of illustration, mysterious and suspenseful. I applaud the creativity. There’s also an orange cat named Smiley that requires many attentions 🐈
I listened to the audiobook in just a couple days. Narrated by Mary Robinette Kowal in an upbeat cadence. Some of the accents were a little comical, but I appreciate the effort to differentiate the characters, it fit the story and atmosphere.
Don’t skip the acknowledgments! The author shares a few quirky bits about her writing process, and how she came to this strange idea!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Tor Books for the advance review copies.
