To put it simply, this was a very solid debut! I loved the layout of the novel, alternating between Joy’s memoir pages, podcast recordings, and Benny’s present timeline where Joy is missing. This created an intriguing mystery and I really enjoyed putting the puzzle together.

Getting to know the ins and outs of Joy and Benny’s relationship was endearing. The passage of time is well crafted, where we really get to know their feelings, much like their podcast listeners. It has the bare bones of traditional missing person trope, but with a lot of heart, heartbreak and emotion (TW: domestic abuse, gaslighting, stalking, miscarriage). I thought both characters were very likable, to be honest, you’ll know who the bad guy is, but it’s a bit more complex, I liked the creativity and messiness of the relationships.

The author uses the podcast theme in a very unique way, alongside the brilliant narration and editing, it kept me invested in all the clues. Julia Whelan and Sean Patrick had an amazing camaraderie together. I would consider this one of the best audiobook productions this year! I absolutely loved the voice effects and the last bonus podcast scene was superb. A++ for voice acting to them both.
