This book shows an important part of history, while the events are embellished and characters loosely based on real people, it is fully immersive and unique in its messaging.

I loved the author’s intro, notes, and the amount of historical research completed. Using his personal ancestry as inspiration for some of the characters. This was an emotional rollercoaster, I was scared, angry, disgusted, and bawled my eyes out in Charity’s chapter. The addition of love and community between the souls of Magnolia Row and beyond created a sense of hope and vulnerability.

Underlining the importance of storytelling, showcasing rebellion and perseverance, as well as oddly satisfying revenge. It is a dark and at times gruesome novel, please read with care.

The author narrates the audiobook, unfortunately it’s choppy and stilted, but that didn’t stop me from listening. The story itself is engrossing so I was able to tune that out.
