So at first glance, the premise of this book is really cool. The world building and technology? magical system? is very unique – it’s a blend of fantasy and sci-fi. There seems to be a lot happening but it also meandered for me quite a bit. The beginning and end are strong, I was bored in the middle. However, the story redeems itself in the end, I’m really curious if this becomes a series because I would continue!
I appreciate the author’s work around gender identity, the swapping of bodies called chassis, and the transfer of a person’s identity, their Pith. It was fluid and kept me guessing throughout. I admit, some of the historical background information left me puzzled, the Star Prophets and sea monsters, there seemed to be a lot I was missing or it flew over my head. It leaves something to be desired, hence the potential of continuing the story.
Besides the pacing, I struggled a little with connecting to the characters, but it ended up being a slow burn. Once the plot picked up in the finale, I really rooted for the band of misfits. A political and power hungry enemy (or enemies) and some tense action kept me on edge. It all ended up working out so I’m looking forward to more.
The audiobook was performed well. I really liked the three narrators and how their voices worked with the various genders and the colorful array of characters. Overall a great production.
