Silvercloak is a dark fantasy with unique magical system and interesting world building, it’s gritty and full of morally gray characters. Saffron watched her parents being killed by Bloodmoons, a house of mages that controls the underbelly of Ascenfall. Swearing to avenge their death, she is sent as a spy for the Silvercloaks. Armed with her unusual power and a conflicting prophecy, Saff finds herself straddling the line between good and evil.

I went into this book with my hopes and expectations very closely guarded, needless to say it surprised me and I’m glad for it. I loved the complexity of the world building, especially the magical system. It was a lot darker than I originally imagined, a lot more ruthless and unforgiving. I think part of why I liked this book so much was the unpredictability, I was fully along for the ride and was unsure where the plot would go. Magic comes with a price, it’s a big theme throughout the book as Saff battles her inner moral compass to blend in as a Bloodmoon.

This was a layered story with incredible character building and I liked what the author did with the prophecy plot to make it stand out. I appreciated the sexual freedom and the romance between Saff and Levan had a nice slow-burn quality that felt very realistic. Heavy on the fantasy and magic rules, where pain or pleasure refill the magic caster’s well, I was engaged in the story and surprised at some of the outcomes. There’s a lot more plot and magic that would be too spoilery to include, but best believe I will be one of the first in line to continue this series!
