Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the free audiobook review copy. I really love Adam Lazarre-White’s voice, he adds great charisma to the characters and dark grit to the performance. I ran through this book in just a few days, even though it was heavy and dark, I quite enjoyed the story.

The characters here are morally gray, pushed into the impossible dark world of drug and gang violence. Roman as the eldest steps in to help his brother Dante get from under their thumb. Their sister Neveah runs the family business while their father is in a coma. Complicated family dynamics and tragic secrets plague the siblings at every turn. Roman must ask himself, what would he do to protect his family?

I felt my blood pressure slowly rising in the finale with a multitude of emotions for these characters. The imagery and descriptions are one of Cosby’s many talents in storytelling. It felt realistic and intense. Straddling a fine thin line between good and evil.
