This story was so emotional and gripping. The formatting was perfect with short chapters that span decades and show us the lives of these characters.

Patch and Saint were always best friends and looking out for each other. I loved Saint and her dedication to finding Patch when everyone stopped looking. This girl had drive and it shows more as she grows up and becomes a bad ass FBI agent.

Patch was a troubled kid, the events of his kidnapping and capture completely changed his life trajectory. Being rescued and not knowing what happened to Grace, whether he imagined her or not, really messed with his head. I appreciated his defiance to find her, no matter the cost.

The characters in this book are really something. Norma and Chief Nix were the honorary parents in these kids’ lives. I loved Norma! She was a rock and I had an emotional connection to her, her unconditional love caring for Saint. How Saint couldn’t tell her about Jimmy and what he had done. Then we had Sammy and his relationship with Patch was very strong, he was a father figure and his connection to the outside world after being incarcerated. There were many every day bright moments between these characters that I just adored.

There was a theme of feminism woven within, that I thought was just so great. The mystery and constant tension of what will happen next really made the book fly by. I’ll be thinking about the characters a lot and this is definitely one of my favorite books of the year!
