Finished this book on July 10th*

After finishing last night, I’m still thinking about this book! I’m even more content with this story now that I’ve had time to think. I woke up at 3am and kept thinking about Alice, Bear, and Barbara, and the whole plot of this book will stay with me for a while.

The writing was phenomenal, I loved the short chapters, jumping POVs and timelines. It worked so well to build the atmosphere, in addition to the summer camp and 60s-70s setting.

I loved that the majority of the book was told by the female characters. They each had distinct voices and I couldn’t get enough of each chapter. I think Judyta was my favorite, not only because she was of Polish descent, but also because she was the most unjaded investigator working the mystery of Barbara’s disappearance. The detective procedural work was very interesting to me. The clues and red herrings were very engaging in setting up the mystery and I very much enjoyed the whole plot even though it made me more sad than hopeful, but the hope is still definitely there.

I read along and listened to the audio performed by Saskia Maarleveld, a new to me narrator, but she was fantastic. Her voice and delivery really added to the ambience of the novel.

Highly recommend!
