This book had a very interesting concept and I quite liked it overall! Spooky, haunting and strange – it features many real-life issues but the fantasy aspect is the focus.

Wilhemina “Wil” Greene is looking for her missing mother, suspecting the powerful Clarke family of wrongdoing. Her father tumbled down into depression and Wil takes on the role of detective.

Elwood Clarke, once Wil’s best friend is struggling to appease his very religious father, dreading his 18th birthday to join him as the leader of Garden of Adam church. The truth is, the church is a cult practicing in sacrifice and Elwood is their chosen one. Confused by what’s happening to him, Elwood turns to the one person that will believe him before someone gets hurt.

The relationship between Wil and Elwood was showcased with current events and flashbacks to their interactions, it was bittersweet and alike to coming of age, growing up and leaving home. I thought both characters were developed enough to interest, it’s not a long book and the climax is a bit rushed, but I don’t mind it in the end.

The whole mood was giving CW show and in this case it’s a good thing! Nancy Drew meets Riverdale. The writing was beautiful at times and I enjoyed all the bug facts and botanical undertones.
