This is my new favorite series, amazing world building and lovable characters. It was emotionally crushing but I loved it! The Last Hero adds a few more POVs into the mix, we hear from the mad scientist himself, Souji val Akira, introduction of The Twins and bystander recollections of all the unfolding events.
I thought I knew where the plot was going and I was only a little bit off, the way the world expanded made everything larger and it was impressive. The themes and messaging in this book are so important and in the end I’m a sucker for that found family trope, it was a big love story to me.
Even though I love all the characters, the true star is Hiro. The struggle with their identity and trying to fit into the mold their father set and challenging that day in and day out, absolutely tugged at my heart. All the val Akira siblings went through the ringer with their father, it was heartwarming that Hiro’s sisters loved them even though their father pushed them away.
Luce – her new arc showcased just how strong she became, even after taking the Genekey virus or especially because of it. I loved the relationship she built with Hemlock, his fatherly role and understanding. I loved that she became an artist and the painting she made of him will live on.
Astrid’s plot was definitely the most wild, it was a rollercoaster! She was finally able to learn about her past and break away from it, it was beautiful – the Scar of Tears had me going F*K YEAH, that was a huge turning point for the book and myself personally. In the last few chapters I loved while hugging Lily she said “surrounded by my sisters, I am home.”
Lito – This is where the scifi got sooo good, I loved the exploration of the Synthetics and the Singularity, that human annihilation percentage had my blood pressure going, no lie. Lito’s chapters were quite emotional, dealing with the memories growing up and with Hiro, their relationship is so strong and it kept trying to break through. Keeping their promise to stay themselves.
I wouldn’t have ended this differently, it was epic and emotional and had so much heart, I don’t think you can go wrong with this series, it resonated with me and will forever have a special place in my heart.
