This book surprised me, mainly how much I ended up enjoying it and I wish I would have picked this as BOTM but alas…
We meet Adelaide Henry as she’s setting her house on fire and leaving to catch a ship out of California. Following the promise of owning her own land in Montana and carrying a huge secret in a trunk, Adelaide is looking forward to starting anew. It’s a dangerous world out in Montana where the weather is harsh but Adelaide builds a friendship with fellow homesteader, Grace and her son Sam and she is generally welcomed into the small community.
Unfortunately her secret gets out, literally out of the trunk. Her worst nightmare and biggest blessing to be rid of the sin she carried her whole life. When someone she met along the way comes around being untruthful and Grace is hurt in a home attack, Adelaide must protect her new found home and the women she cares about, with whatever means necessary. The book leaves much of the conclusion to the imagination but I think that’s a good thing!
I wouldn’t categorize this as a horror story, it was a paranormal historical drama with wonderful world building and strong, independent female characters. I am a bit obsessed about this lone women’s history as I never heard about it and it’s fascinating! I thought it was reminiscent of the show Midnight Mass IYKYK 👀👹
I listened to the audiobook performed by Joniece Abbott-Pratt (she also did the Legendborn series) and I’m a big fan, her delivery was imaginative and really made Adelaide come to life.
